Resident Pass Update: after approval what's next?

We were ecstatic when we saw online that our RP application was approved. I waited 2 days to see if they will contact me, but I didn't hear from them... so I decided to drop them an email. They promptly replied to the email congratulating me on the application approval. And they stated the additional requirements needed which I have to prepare (together with the payment submission). It took me another 1 week to put all requirements together. Fortunately, I was very inquisitive about the requirements because I did not want to waste my time (and drive all the way to Cyberjaya which is 1-hour away from Mont Kiara) with incomplete documents!

In the email, they stated the balance payment that is due to Talent Corp as well as another fee which is due to the Immigration of Malaysia.

Sharing with you the total costs so that you have an idea:

1. When we applied online, we had to send an initial RM600 to Talent Corp -- this is just to cover processing fees. One will need to prepare a BANK DRAFT for the payment and they do not accept anything else. The RM600 covered for myself, my husband and for my daughter.

2. After the email approval, I had to go to the bank and prepare 4 BANK DRAFTS:
a. TALENT CORP - had to pay RM4,900 in total for the balance due to them which covers me, husband and daughter
b. IMMIGRATION - we had to pay different fees because this depends on your nationality. Because my passport is CHINA, the fees were higher than my hubby's and daughter's (French). Plus all the payments need to be separate --- meaning 1 check per person. So total of 3 bank drafts payable to Immigration. Mine was RM650. Hubby and Daughter was RM 564.50 each.

All I can advise is to make sure you clear our all the requirements to avoid delay (and even a disappointing trip to Cyberjaya!) It almost happened to me, as the email only asked for "passport picture with blue background" and it stated they needed only MY picture. We were doubtful of that, so we sent an email to clarify. True enough, we needed Picture with BLUE BACKGROUND for all of us. That meant 2 trips to Bangsar Shopping Centre for us ... all because they were not too clear about the additional requirements.

Another thing to note: If your spouse is working and have an existing work permit, you will also need a company letter from your spouse's company -- the NO OBJECTION LETTER needs to be submitted together with the payment. They wanted the original copies of the no objection letter -- so make sure this is also prepared!

The drive to Cyberjaya was smooth. The GPS took me straight to the eXpats office. It was a pleasant surprise to see they have allocated special parking for eXpats clients who are there to submit documents. Unfortunately no one told me that so i parked so far away. Well, next time I will park at the special parking.

I went to submit our passports, No Objection Letters, passport pictures with blue background, our wedding certificate which was certified true copy by the Singapore embassy, plus another document which they sent (it was in Bahasa Malaysia)... they wanted my local contact to sign on that form.

The submission was easy. The place was nice, with aircon and newspaper and even coffee machine, internet, and TV. It was not a long wait.

After she checked all the documents, they handed me the receipt for the Talent Corp payment. Plus 3 signed documents which were ready -- these are to be used in case of any emergency -- as we dont have our passports with us. It states that we have RP approval and our passports are under processing.

It has been 3 working days since my submission. Let's see how long it will take for them to call me and allow me to collect our passports with our Resident Pass!

By the way -- the visa they will stamp is for 5 years only. That is the max that the gov't is giving. It will be 5-yrs visa with additional 5 years after the expiry ... so it will be total of 10 years... but that means after 5 years we need to go back for stamping again (and probably some fees). Just so you know what to expect!

  1. Hi! We just moved to KL from Switzerland and are living in Mont Kiara. Can you tell me which Catholic Church that has mass in English or French is closest to Mont Kiara? I downloaded a list from the diocese and we attempted to find one last week but ended up giving up because it was out in the middle of nowhere.

  2. hi Katie F. The Catholic Church we go to is located in Petaling Jaya. Search for Saint Francis Xavier (they have a website and even Facebook!). Around that area there is also another church called Assunta.

A lot of expats I know (who are from Mont Kiara) also attend mass at St Francis Xavier

Hope this helps and that you get to go to mass this Sunday!

  3. Hi and thanks for your great blog! I just moved to KL from Finland a month ago and have found your writings really helpful! So thanks!

Would you know about recycling in KL? As a European I´m used to recycling almost anything, but despite googling haven´t found much information about this in Malaysia. Do you konw is there any place when one can take e.g. empty glass and plastic bottels or cans?

  4. Hi, Do you have information :

    - Is there any work limitation for our spouse if using RP ? i.e max/min Salary ?
    - After 10 Years using RP can we extend the RP or 10 years is the maximum ?

    Thanks

Thanks again and congrats! Claire

  6. Hi anonymous, hope you were able to finally attach your files online. Worse case if all fails, give them a call. Or, collect all documents and drive to cyberjaya to submit. Good luck! We finally received our RP!!!

  7. For spouse, there is no set limit on salary. As long as the applying person meets the minimum salary requirement of RP, which is rm12k/month

  8. Nice info!

I've just finished applying on line myself.

Can I ask how long from submitting to being approved?

Btw, for the person having trouble uploading, it's most likely because you are uploading a word doc. Save it as PDF and try. Then press upload. You can do this and remove later or add once you're finished and happy then hit the declaration button to submit.

  9. Never mind, i took my bank draft in today and was told it's 21 days.

  10. Hi atallman,

So sorry for not replying sooner. Yes, it is 21 days from the day you submit your bank draft payments. Their help desk is quite responsive thru email if you want to drop follow up email. I must warn you though that after approval, they will ask for some original documents (which meant more work again to secure some of it in my case). Plus be aware to double check you have all papers before heading to cyberjaya which is quite a Drive from the city.... They almost missed out the fact that I needed to submit passport photo with blue background for ALL applicants (including dependents). The email mentioned picture for myself only. All the best on your application! Good luck!

  11. Hi Anu, on recycling, in certain condominiums they have recycling trash where they segregate batteries, plastics, paper and glass. As for composte, I'm not sure if that is popular here in KL. I have yet to meet someone who does that in Malaysia... Or at least I have not met anyone yet. I saw some composte containers being sold in Ikea in case you need any. Most of the composte recycling I have seen so far was when I was vacationing in France.
On the topic of recycling, I am starting to see "no plastic bag days" in certain groceries and malls... Which is a good start!

If I see any additional info on recycling (and where to bring your plastics, cans, etc) will let you know....

  16. Hi PinkAddict
It's good to hear that you've got your RP successfully.
Well, I have gone through the requirement list for RP at talentcorp site. Sadly, I do meet all except the minimum salary requirement which is 12K/month. Mine is lesser than that. I've been working in malaysia since 4.5 years and been paying tax since day first. So, I thought of applying RP and stay/work here for longer.
I would appreciate your advise here. Can I still apply for RP beside not meeting salary requirement? If yes then, will it be the same procedure like as you did or I need to supply any extrac doc.
    Thank you

  17. Hi Tashi, happy to hear u are considering the RP. I am not in the position to say if the salary is a strict requirement. Perhaps a suggestion could be trying to get in touch with them thru email. State your situation and explain. Good luck!

  20. I am applying for the Residence Pass online. In the following section it has asked for Testimonials. What is uploaded here?

  21. The testimonials, that is where you need to get a LOCAL RESIDENT (Meaning Malaysian) to attest or be witness that you are a good person. Basically if you have a Malaysian friend, all he / she needs to do is sign the form (and give all necessary info) plus you need a scanned copy of their Malaysian IC (Their Identity Card). This is to prove you are of good moral character and that someone know you are an "ok" person... hope this helps.

  22. Hi...just actually dropped off the passports today for endorsement of the pass. I went to their office last friday after getting the approval to find out the process for converting the maid visa. Funnily they told me that they never faced a single issue of this nature before. however, they got all the requirements from Immigration and I submitted those today as well. Lets see how they work it out.

In the menatime, I was told that the passports would be ready for collection next week...Fingers crossed :)

  24. Hi PinkAddict,

Thank you for the time you have taken to share your experience about the Resident Pass. I hope the info posted will be very useful for everyone reading this blog.

Recently i have submitted my Resdient Pass application via online. The only issue on my application is minimum salary requirement which is 12K/month.

My current salary is 5 digits eventhough i am not getting the gross annual salary(144,000) mentioned by Talent Corp for the Resident Pass.

Have any idea any one Resdient Pass approved with salary not in that range. Please advise me. Thank you.

    Thanks & Regards

  27. Hi,
Thank you for sharing this info with us, by the way I have a question, I was checking FAQ for RP, they mentioned:
"once the application reaches Immigration for final approval, the employer will be called to facilitate cancellation of Employment Pass in before issuing the RP-Talent"

would you please share with me that what exactly employer have to do at this point, & do they ask him any sort of questions regarding RP of the applicant?

    1. I was on unpaid leave with my employer when i was processing my RP, so I am not sure what transpired back then. All i know is that if you provided that "No Objection Letter" from the employer, then it shouldn't be a problem if they do call your HR for the cancellation of the Work Permit. Not sure if they will even call them since they have it in writing already.

Basically my employer didn't get hold of my passport. What happened was when the RP sticker was ready, they asked me to leave my passport with them for a few days and then i went to pick up again.

Good luck and all the best!

  28. Hi, Thanks for all your sharing.

By the way, did you get i-Pass (expat identification card) along with the RP endorsement in the passport or did take sometime before it is issued?

    Best Regards,

    1. Hi, it took them a while before we could get the expat identification (PINK colored card)... probably around 2-3 months before they issued it ... if i remember correctly. Meanwhile, the small solution is to photocopy your sticker RP into a small copy and laminate that... so you can bring it in your wallet.

    2. Hubby updated to a new passport recently. It took the XPATS centre (the one issuing the Resident Pass cards) around 2 months. Today, August 23 I went to pick up hubby's new pink card called the i-Pass. So far, this is a better experience than the old GOLD CARD which was the Work Permit... the Immigration couldnt print out cards for many years citing "machine problems".

  29. I got mine approved withing 3 weeks of submitting and have handed in my passport last week to get the stamp/sticker.

I didn't meet the RM12k/month criteria, at least in local salary as I have less salary (which is taxed in Malaysia) but also an overseas salary which I provided evidence of and they approved me.

The online application asked for all pages from your passport but it only allows 23 pages maximum to be uploaded and I have 2 x 64 page passports (2 nationalities) but they said just do the main pages - ID page, work permit page) which was accepted.

My question is whether the card allows you to go through the faster immigration lines or not - the gold card for some other visas allows you to use these lines. As someone who passes through the airport 4 to 6 times a month I would be very happy if this is allowed!

    1. Hi there ,

Ajay here. I am also having my own business in Kuala Lumpur and currently holding EP. I am running my business here since 2006 and tax payer as well.

Only thing my salary does not meet the criteria of 12k/ month as yours... i saw your message here and wondered as their requirement is for this minimum salary still they approve? means I can also try..what evidences you provided them for your overseas income?

      Thanks , regards.

      Ajay.

      Delete
    2. Yes, they approved without minimum salary. Actually the wording is a bit vague - it says 12k taxable salary - doesn't mention where it is taxable! :-)

Definitely you can try it - it will only cost you RM200 if it is rejected.

Evidence of overseas income - just the pay slips going into the overseas bank account for 3 months in a row.

    1. hi there, i am not sure what exactly you are asking. They will NOT cancel your work permit prior to getting your RP (if that is what you are asking). If you have RP before and it got cancelled, as long as you are not listed in the "VISA" list I am sure you can enter the country again (though the immigration will have the right to question you, ask how long you will stay, return tickets, etc). that is my point of view

  31. Hi

I just got my RP approved for me, my spouse and my 1 year old son. I gather from the info here that I will need to go to CJ to get my current work permit cancelled and new RP stamped.

My issue is my maid whose work permit is tied to my current work permit. Do they (TalentCorp) facilitate easy transfer of permits for the maid or you have to do it on your own.

If somebody can share their personal experience of the same issue it will be great.

    Regards

    1. hi MK,

Don't worry. I had a personal experience on this.

My RP was approved last year. I applied for my whole family... so hubby and daughter got it through my application. Problem is, my maid's work permit was tied to my Work Permit... which at this case my WP was cancelled bec of the RP.

I decided to do nothing about it until the maid's visa was up for renewal.

True enough, this year (May 2012) I went to renew the maid's visa at Putrajaya. They saw the RP. No problem. They just needed a bit more time (than usual) because they had to liaise with TalentCorp in Cyberjaya to get approval. In the end, they processed the maid's work permit and now tied to my RP.

Again, it will take more days than the usual old process bec now they had to work with the RP team. In the end, there was no issue for me.

      All the best to you!

  33. Have the Talent Pass but now have had to move to Singapore for work. Have advised TC and they say hat is ok. I said I want to move back to KL in next few years but with a possibility of not working. Does anyone know what the procedure will be for the renewal as I may not have any income to demonstrate nor have paid tax in Malaysia ? Will it just be a new stamp in passport for a fee or will I need to demonstrate all the criteria again ?

  38. Hi,

After fulfilling all the criteria's for RP-T(10 yrs Visa),
I applied for RP-T via their online website https://www.myxpats.com.my/rpt/
After 1 months, I saw the final status as "UNSUCCESSFUL" due to the following reasons":

    1. Your basic salary is still at the minimum range even you met the minimum requirement which RM 15,000. (Even-though my basic salary is 17,xxx.xx)
2.Your current stay in Malaysia is 3 years and panel still consider as the minimum range of years(I am staying since 3.4+ yrs)
Your application may not be suitable to fall under RP-T currently. The respective team has advised you to stay under Employment Pass first.

I tried to call them but they are not giving proper reasons. Also they never reply to email as well.

Not sure when can i apply again. Let me know if anyone knows what to do next, would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Pawan

  44. Hi Hira,
You can apply once you have the minimum requirement wrt salary. But make sure you have stayed atleast 3 yrs in Malaysia on an EP. What I have been told is that candidates with a minimum of 20k MYR salary and atleast 4 yrs under EP in Malaysia stand a better chance of getting the RP-T approved. This info is from a few successful candidates I have been in touch with.
