Sunday Chill at Hartamas - Fantastic Juice, Brunch Pork Bacon, and Serious Coffee

I treasure my Sunday mornings. The special day where I get to do what I want, with no pressure nor schedule. Sometimes, we get some only adults time. Other days when our helper is not around, we have to spend time with kids on activities that could entertain them.

This weekend, helper was around, so daddy and I had alone time!

I am very proud of hubby as he was able to survive his first Hot Yoga-Pilates class at Urban Sprint Pilates Bangsar. We did a hot class and it was really killer. Killer sweat and very hard core poses. It's his first! After our class, we treated ourselves to some leisure yumminess in Hartamas area.

We made 3 stops: La Juiceria Cold-Pressed Detox Bar, Bread Fruits and Coffea Coffee.

La Juiceria Hartamas: we went to get some cold-pressed juices to hydrate. We sweated a lot and need to replenish electrolytes and all that water we lost. Quench our bodies with nutrients!

Bread Fruits: kick-ass brunch and prosciutto sandwich. Really top notch. This is our 4th visit to the place. Pork bacon, pork sausages, fluffy scramble eggs, friendly service. Their juices seem to be popular, though I find it just ok. Their coffee machine broke down, what timing! Was hoping to enjoy my pork brunch with some serious coffee... was disappointed I couldn't do that combo. However, their beautiful presentation and consistent brunch spread made up for it.

Coffea Coffee Hartamas: Stone's throw from Bread Fruits. Since we missed the coffee kick, we walked over to get some serious coffee. Beautiful ambience and spacious. Love the interiors. Coffee was superb too. Worth the money. Plus they have HSBC discount!

Sushi Hinata and Black Market at St. Mary Place KLCC

It was a Friday evening and we decided to be different. We were already at the heart of KL doing some groundwork so we decided to stick inside the city, brave the traffic and find a decent place which we have not yet tried.

Our google search ended up with this Sushi Place which is at St Mary Residences in KL. I heard good things about it from fellow expat friends so we decided to give it a go.

Upon arrival to St. Mary Place, with parking slots aplenty at their basement parking, we strolled the walkway and realized there are several establishments. Seems like a new, hip place and I am sure the residents are happy to have such convenience around.

We saw there was an Italian restaurant, which was partially full. The San Francisco Coffee was closed already when we got there. And there were tons of Japanese families having beer and some pica pica food at Black Market (inside and outside).

We headed to Sushi Hinata and at their exterior they displayed their prices. They want to be clear with their limited offering and specialty, so I guess it is wise to display it outside for all to see before they make the mistake of entering and expecting the full Japanese fare.

We had 2 orders of the Kiku Menu which comprised of sushi and some accompanying stuff. We stayed inside one of the rooms which had privacy, since their sushi bar seats were all reserved already.

To make the long story short:
  • The place is beautiful, with authentic Japanese feel, food and fare. Plus Japanese customers. Good sign.
  • The price is expensive for a normal day meal
  • The portion was small -- for RM154 per person, I think we could get quality Japanese food elsewhere
  • Perhaps we are not sushi lovers enough to say it was worth it.
  • I do love sushi -- however maybe this is not the kind of place for expats like me who yearn for sushi and some hot food together... and someone who wants to have choices
  • After paying the bill, we walked to the next door neighbor restaurant called Black Market to have a bit more food because hubby was not full. It felt a bit depressing as this was the first time we ever had to go to another restaurant to get "full". Mind you, we don't eat a lot, but the portion was just really small. Or perhaps we should have ordered the even more expensive menu.
  • Good staff and good service.

Huckleberry Food & Fare at Damansara Heights

I have always asked why, oh why does Kuala Lumpur not have enough breakfast places. I was happy to hear that this new place called Huckleberry Food and Fare opened nearby my place.

Located at the shop lots at Damansara Heights, it stands out beautifully with their white exterior and flowers beside the al fresco seating.

The interiors are beautifully designed, you can feel the rustic & artsy elements surrounded by friendly waiters. I loved the long wood table inside the cafe, which is perfect for families or big groups.

I also met the managers and people running the place -- you can see they are working hard to make sure everything is going well.

Highlights for us were the cinammon roll and Kouign Amann (the most luscious, buttery bread you will ever eat in your life). I remember gushing over the Kiougn Amann of The Bread Shop (which is also located in the Damansara Heights area).

They had hot breakfast dishes, lunch menu and more. Only had the stomach to try to some of it. Will surely be back to try the others. For us, the pastries were the must-have's.

Revisited on June 27 Saturday Morning

Gave Huckleberry another visit and it was packed!

This time we dedicated our breakfast to just pastries and coffee.

Was disappointed with the cinnamon roll this round, because it was hard. As if it was overcooked or stayed outside for hours. I informed the waited and asked if this was normal, because last week it was oh-so-soft and yummy. One of the ladies came out to apologize and quickly replaced it. That was very sweet of them. This is all part of new opening jitters -- not everything goes 100% especially when so many people are coming at the same time... so we fully understood that some things could not be consistent. It was nice of them to offer replacement (and they did ask if I would like to just cancel).

Would still recommend their pastries -- and this round we tried the Almond Croissant. Not bad. It is hard to find decent Almond Croissant in KL. Even in France, not all places serve superb Croissant Aux Amandes.

Coffee is decent and will surely satisfy coffee lovers.

Al fresco seats. Helpful staff and owners.
